DOGS

Some people keep their dogs indoors, others prefer to leave them outside.
Regardless of where you choose to keep your dog, it will need a house or bed which
is all its own. This way, the dog can use its bed as a refuge if it feels uncomfortable
or just tired. Indoor dogs may be offered crates or beds, which come in a variety of
sizes and are sold at many pet stores. If you choose to offer your dog a crate, there
are two types available. Wire crates are very easy to disinfect and clean, in addition
to giving your dog plenty of ventilation. Plastic crates are also quite easy to clean,
but your dog will not be able to see out of the sides very well. This type of crate is
the type required by airlines, so if you plan to travel with your dog this may influence
your decision. Also, because the dog cannot see out of the crate it may feel more
comfortable and sheltered, as though it has its own cave or den. No matter what sort
of crate you
plan to use, it should be large enough that your dog can stand up and turn around
inside it. You should also try to choose a crate that has a few inches of airspace
above yo
ur dog's head when it is standing or sitting. Some people will utilize their dog's
crate in house training. The other sort of indoor bed for your dog is a soft bed.
These can be as simple as a pillow you designate for your dog, or a box lined with
blankets. You can purchase specially made dog beds in pet stores.

PUPPY CARE

Your puppy may whine or cry at night at first. He has been separated from his
mother & litter mates, and will be lonely. Unless the cries are sharp indicating
pain or illness, do not pick up the puppy. If you do, he will continue to cry every
night. Place the puppy in his crate, and then go and reassure him periodically.
He will soon learn that nighttime is for sleeping, not crying. I also suggest giving
your puppy a small stuffed toy right away. It will comfort your puppy when you are
away. Be sure that the toy has no pieces that could be chewed off and choked on.
Avoid yelling at your puppy. A sharp "no" is all that is needed when he does
something wrong. Yelling at or hitting your puppy will give him a low self esteem,
and he will not obtain his full potential.

It is important to find a vet who will listen to you and who you feel comfortable with.
You will spend a lot of time with your pet, watching and thinking - however we are
not vets and we need them. However, you should have a vet who doesn't always
have to be right at any cost and one who is willing to listen to you so that a proper
diagnosis can be made. Approach your vet as you would your own doctor and if
vou feel he is going down the wrong path do not be afraid to say so. A good vet will
appreciate what you think.

If your puppy has been used to playing with rope toys, small stuffed animals and cow
hooves. I do not recommend rawhides because as they chew they get smaller, small
pieces can break off and get lodged in the windpipe and stomach for days.

If your the puppy chews the wrong things, try Bitter Apple (clear, odourless liquid)
and spray or rub it on furniture, cords, shoes, etc. in the pups absence. It is to divert
her attention to the right things rather than to correct the pup. Correct your pup only
if
they persists in chewing the wrong things. This breed is intelligent and stubborn -
they very quickly learn all the ways to get negative attention, no hitting. good
behavior give rewards.
